The USA Network, an American satellite and basic cable television channel, is owned by NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Group. Original programming included comedy, drama, action and reality. USA Network was initially launched as Madison Square Garden Sports Network. It was renamed USA Network in September 1977 by its parent company, French media conglomerate Vivendi.
This channel was launched to compete against CNN’s Headline news service. Before then, most news or entertainment coverage was combined with regular news programming or updates during commercial breaks.
